Race Across America with Team Tri for Hospice

In 2012 a group of triathlon training partners formed Team Tri for Hospice, a fundraising group that has used its passion for endurance sports as a vehicle to assist our local hospice affiliate in carrying out its mission to provide care, compassion, assistance and reassurance to families facing end-of-life challenges.

More than likely, we all have known someone whose life and those of the people around them have been turned upside down by cancer, Alzheimers, and other terminal illnesses —whether friend, family, classmate, neighbor or colleague. It is a difficult journey that sometimes, sadly, ends with a focus on care rather than cure. While hospice cares for all who need their assistance, often insurance and Medicaid do not cover all expenses; and they rely upon donations to bridge that gap.

Based on our shared hospice experiences, our training group decided that we would like to aid those who don’t have the resources to help their loved ones find quality care and comfort in their final days. Over the past four years, Team Tri for Hospice has sponsored a number of cycling and triathlon events that have raised over $65,000 for Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro.

This year we will be participating in the Race Across America (RAAM). For this particular fund-raising project, we are excited to expand our scope to a national stage (with 55 time stations across 12 states) in order to promote a wider, healthier conversation about death and dying and spread the message that hospice provides support, guidance and care not only for the terminally ill but also to families, friends and caregivers. We plan to connect with non-profit hospices located in each state in hopes that our RAAM Team can be a vehicle for awareness and fundraising in their local community, as well. Over the course of six days, Team Tri for Hospice riders will cycle over 3000 miles from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD with the additional goal of breaking the coed record for our age group.

We would greatly appreciate your support for this important cause. Your donation dollars will be used to off-set the cost of undertaking this epic journey—promotion, fees, transportation, food, equipment, and the like for four riders and a crew of 8-12 support people. The riders and crew will be challenged to raise a minimum of $1,000 each, which will be donated to HPCG or to the rider/crew member’s local non-profit Hospice if they do not reside in Greensboro. Thank you in advance for your consideration of support for Team Tri for Hospice. Your support will allow us to raise both awareness and funds not only for Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro but for other non-profit hospices across the country. Together, we will directly help individuals and their families receive quality care, compassion and support, regardless of ability to pay -- and to “start the conversation” about healthier ways to deal with end of life issues.

In recognition of your support, we will be creating a Memory Wall on our  Team Tri for Hospice webpage. When you make a donation, please say in the "comments" section if it is in honor of or in memory of someone and we will be sure they have a place of honor on our wall.
